Proposal
Problem & Objective
This research attempts to
look at the question of why some households are getting ahead
over time, while others fall behind. It aims to answer three questions:
How do poverty and other dimensions of well-being change over
time? What are the casual factors underlying pathways from poverty?
What role do policy interventions play in these pathways from
poverty? The goals is to inform policies aimed at helping households
move, and stay, out of poverty.
Research Context
To explore the pathways from poverty
this research will use existing longitudinal data sets from four
countries: Ethiopia, Mexico, the Philippines and South Africa. The
data will allow for analysis over time, since all data sets cover
a period of at least six years, and in one case as long as 20 years.
This quantitative data can be combined with existing qualitative
data sets, to study economic mobility and changes in households
and communities over time.
Policy Implications
The project has connections with
policymakers and development professionals in all four countries.
The analysis conducted here will provide insight into program characteristics
that could be effective in poverty reduction. Researchers will also
discuss current issues, questions, and concerns with policymakers
and use this research to inform the creation and evolution of effective
poverty reduction policies.
